My wife wanted to do something different this Valentine’s day. In addition to it being on Tuesday this year, we didn’t want to do the usual steak dinner at one of the Valley’s MANY steak houses. While scrolling through one of the Lehigh Valley food Facebook pages we both follow we saw an old favorite pop up - Jenny’s Kuali. We were saddened when they closed their physical location late last year, but were excited that Jenny was moving on to more experiences (and like most things) we forgot about their amazing food.
Fast forward to the end of January while scrolling we saw that Jenny was doing some new things, a pop-up brunch, some catering for small events, and most excitingly; Couples Classes! Abby signed us up right away for a night of roll wrapping and wok working.
We weren’t exactly sure what to expect when we walked into the small corner breakfast place in Allentown near the fairgrounds. Jenny had reserved Jay’s Local for the evening. We entered and saw several other couples already sitting down with their food and another behind the coffee bar teaching another to make spring rolls. Our teacher met us at the door and whisked us away to the counter where Abby and I learned how to make and roll Jenny’s famous spring rolls. Once our springs were rolled we sat down to chat while the team took care of the deep frying. They came out PERFECT. Delicious, especially with Jenny’s ginger sauce, one of Abby’s personal favorites from the original location.
Finally, we were brought back to the giant industrial stove where 2 large Woks sat heating up. We were both able to choose an entree to cook, I went with Nasi Goreng - Malaysian Fried Rice, Abby went the noodle route with Chow Kuey Teow, a soy-based rice noodle dish. We were given a crash course in Wok Frying, cracked our eggs, and were off. Once the egg was fried we added our pre-prepped ingredients and continued to stir fry. Our teacher then provided us each with our own spice/sauce mixture. He showed us a technique where you add your seasoning to a ladle, then dump the seasoning into the wok and use the ingredients in the pan to get all of the sauce out of the Ladle. WICKED COOL. I always love picking up new tricks. In about 15 minutes Abby and I sat back down to enjoy the fruits of our labor. Truly delicious!
Needless to say we will absolutely be booking another night with Jenny, hopefully for some Dim Sum next!!
